How about installation

Select Installation with acpi disabled and add following paramteres:
vga=791 NOPCMCIA=yes

After first boot, edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove acpi=off and replace it with pci=noacpi

* Note
1) vga=0x317 instead of vga=791 also works as suggested by Bernhard M. Wiedemann(to whom I'm also gratefull for unselfish help and support he was willing to provide).
Also I used text mode for installation (press F2 and select it on top)
2) I have had a lot of problems since VIA VN800 graphics IGP Unichrom Pro chipset is not supported by default/updated SuSE 9.3 kernel's. Most of my installation I have done in init mode 3 before installing VIA IGP chipset Unichrome Pro video drivers found on (VIA Arena) you may also download drivers directly and install them by following the incorporated readme file.

Other Hardware

ALPS Glide Point - touchpad, USB ports, LAN card VT6102 (Rhine-II), AC97 sound, all worked with no special tweaking (after installin g Multimedia Packs 1 and 2 through YaST2 online update). I haven't tested nor the modem nor wireless card as I had no time and no available dialup/WLAN's. Maybe I'll test it during trip to Afghanistan and publish it later, anyway, Broadcom card has been recognised and ndiswrapper package installed.

More on IGP Unichrome video

In SaX2 I'have selected generic LCD monitor while graphics controller has been detected card has been recognized as FSC VGA compatible.
Besides VIA own drivers there are two more Unichrome driver providers for Linux. I haven't tested these as I was all occupied by my trip preparations but, nevertheless, bellow are links to these projects so if someone is willing ... Unichrome project at, and OpenChrome project.
My xorg.conf file looks as xorg-FSC-Amilo-V2030.conf

I haven't played with but as Bernhard M. Wiedemann suggests Hotkeys are supported in X11 by xhkeys This can be built with
rpmbuild --rebuild xhkeys-2.2.1-bmw1.src.rpm
xhkeys.plugin1: xhkeys_cdaudio;cda;devname="/dev/cdrom";devgrab=n
xhkeys.plugin2: xhkeys_mixer;vol;devname="/dev/mixer"channel=-1;devgrab=n
xhkeys.codeline1:       236;0;A;mozilla
xhkeys.codeline2:       178;0;A;gvim
xhkeys.codeline4:       174;0;PL;2;Volume -5
xhkeys.codeline3:       176;0;PL;2;Volume +5

FSC Amilo is a pretty nice laptop to have, though not as a supplement for your desktop, but simply you may take around with you as it is reasonably light and compact. It doesn't have all the connectors you may (n)ever need but it's a reliable and fast machine for a reasonable price.
